Manuel Perez: Riverside County Board of Supervisor

I know that the COVID-19 is greatly affecting the Latino community. I know that many Latinos have tested positive for COVID-19. For example, two months ago the Western part of Coachella had a lot of people test positive for the virus and now it has moved to parts of Indio and Mecca,

It is very important that we take care of ourselves and to take precautions. We need to cover our mouths and maintain six feet of distance. This is mandatory, not optional. We cannot stop taking these precautions because the number of Latinos with the virus continues to grow.

There was a vote held on May 5th about whether face masks should be mandatory or a recommendation. I want face masks to be mandatory, not only so we can save lives but so we can reduce the number of cases.

The schools are closed for this school year. The county of Riverside has a guide that says schools are closed until June 15. Schools will still not be able to have graduations, dances, classes, or gatherings. I agree with this guide but the Governor has a guide that in my opinion is more effective. This guide can help more people than the guide we currently have because the Riverside guide is only until June 15th and the Governor’s guide is until July 15th.

Many people believed that after June 15th that there would be graduations, dances, or gatherings. This is not true. As a county we need to make sure everyone understands the guides and that schools will be closed at minimum until July.

These guides will help Superintendents, teachers, principles, and schools plan to open schools, which will not be until after July. Schools will not open until the number of cases of Coronavirus stops increasing. However, people need to understand that moving forward, schools are going to be much different.

We also need to make sure everyone has access to WiFi. We need to fight for the young who do not have access to the internet.

We need to continue to practice social distancing, wear face masks, and wash your hands regularly. I am going to speak with my colleagues to make it so that wearing face masks is mandatory. This is how we win the fight against Coronavirus.
